Prevention — the most powerful treatment

What’s the best way to fight a serious illness? Stop it from happening in the first place. Great specialty care starts with proactive primary care. Prevention is the first line of defense — the foundation for a long and healthy life.

3 elements of industry-leading prevention

  1. A CONNECTED SYSTEM
  2. A COORDINATED TEAM
  3. A PROACTIVE, WHOLE-PERSON APPROACH
Description for tabimg1 from asset.

You’re busy — with work, family, and life. When you’re a Kaiser Permanente member, it’s not your job to keep track of what kind of care you need. It’s ours. Your electronic health record triggers reminders for screenings. Your care team can see a complete picture of your health at every visit. Getting care feels easier, moves faster, and everything gets documented along the way. All because everyone — and everything — works together.

Everyone on your care team can talk to each other — and consult in real time across departments, locations, and specialties. Say you come in for a checkup and your heartbeat sounds irregular. Your doctor can consult with a cardiologist during that same routine appointment, and seamlessly connect you to specialized care if you need it. There’s no worrying about where to go next or how to get your health records into the right hands. We coordinate it all for you.

We look at the whole picture of your health — from addressing common behaviors and lifestyle risks to identifying more subtle factors that can seriously affect your health. That includes:

More ways to connect to care
Not feeling well? Call us 24/7. Need care now? Request a same-day appointment. Can’t make the drive? Talk to a doctor or nurse by phone or video.

Plus:

  • Access your health records 24/7.
  • Choose your own primary care physician — a doctor you trust and feel comfortable with.
  • Get support for healthy living — with classes, coaching, reduced gym membership rates, tools for self-care, and more.2

Our doctors track exercise at checkups — just like your blood pressure, height, and weight — to get a better picture of your overall health.

Bilingual providers and interpretation services help us deliver care that’s sensitive to your culture, ethnicity, and lifestyle — and ultimately a better experience for our members

Some people need more specialized preventive care. If we identify you as at a higher risk for a serious illness, we help you manage it.

For example, we use inherited risk calculators to identify members who are more likely to develop certain cancers. Then we create personalized plans for genetic counseling and/or testing and provide ongoing support to help prevent these conditions altogether — or help catch them before they become life-threatening.

Working to advance preventive care

Optimizing cancer screening for all

We’re exploring how to screen for cancer most effectively and consistently across different settings, so all communities can receive the greatest benefit. Funded by the National Cancer Institute, this project brings multiple health systems together to address the preventive care disparities that contribute to poorer cancer outcomes among certain populations. Together, we’ll figure out how all people can get effective, consistent cancer screenings, regardless of who they are, where they live, or their income level.

Exploring the connection between genes, environment, and health

The Kaiser Permanente Research Bank is one of the largest research projects in the U.S. The program focuses on understanding how genetic and environmental factors affect health and disease — with the goal of developing more effective preventive care measures, and better treatments and cures.
